AIM 7.0.8.15 Beta 5 Released
August 21, 2009 - Beta 5 is here and available for download!
We're happy to release AIM 7 Beta 5 to the AIM beta community. This build focuses on bug fixing and stability improvements.

One of the largest changes in this version was a change to address a slowness/lagging/hanging problem reported by some beta users. If, after you install this version, you experience abnormal slowness, lagging, or hanging of your AIM please send us beta feedback.

There were also quite a few Fixed Issues and a couple new Known Issues in this release, so make sure to check them out before you download and get started using the latest AIM 7 beta.

Thanks for continuing to help us build the next version of AIM!

AIM 7 Beta 3
AIM 7 Beta 3 is a small refresh to the AIM 7 Beta. We've added the ability to add a photo to your status message and we've improved stability. We're continuing to monitor your feedback and making changes to make a client that everyone will love. Thanks for continuing to help us build the next version of AIM!

What's new in AIM 7 Beta 3:

* Upload pictures with your status messages. Sometimes a message really needs a picture to get the point across. Now you can upload a picture from your PC that will appear next to your status message in AIM 7 and in the lifestream. For now, the pics will be shown next to your status only when viewed by AIM 7 and lifestream users.
* Stability improvements. We found a bunch of crashes in Beta 2 (thanks for the testing!) and have done a lot of work that we believe will make Beta 3 more stable. We're always trying to make AIM as reliable as we can.

Of course, all the great features we've introduced in Betas 1 and 2 remain in this release.

This release only introduces one new Known Issue; don't forget to check it out.

Download AIM 7 Beta 3 to get started -- and show us some status messages with pictures!

As always, we look forward to your feedback. Chat with other testers through the message boards or send feedback directly to the team using the feedback form. Did you know the feedback form is accessible from the Buddy List Help menu in AIM 7 as well?

AIM 6.5.4.15 Released
09/28/07 - We're getting close to launching the new AIM 6.5. Help us test drive the latest AIM beta software - version 6.5.4.15. We've listened to your feedback and have continued to make improvements to our new features. This version includes the following updates:

New Themes: Now you can customize your AIM experience with MORE colors. Check out the color wheel at the top of the Buddy List window, and select your favorite theme. We got a little creative with the names. Let us know what you think.
Stream Music: After downloading AIM, select the option to also install the AIM Tunes plugin. It allows you to stream music from and to your buddies. Once you download the plugin look to the Actions menu on your Buddy List window for the AIM Tunes site to launch in your default browser. Then play around with fun options like play list management, upload new music, and check out what your buddies are listening to.
One click to Buddy info: Back by popular demand, we have brought back the one-click to view your buddy’s 'Buddy Info'. Notice that familiar blue indicator. You’ll still get the orange indicator in the Buddy List to indicate when something has been updated by your buddy.
Audio/Video updates: New software updates have been made to improve Live Video performance under low bandwidth conditions. Also, especially for Vista users, we've added more default device options found in your Enhanced IM settings.
Enhanced call notifications: If you use our call products, you will now receive incoming call alerts directly in your IM and as an alert.
Module enhancements: We made managing your modules easier. Click the buttons to expand and collapse the modules. We've made some slight design changes too.
Buddy Info Design Update: Status messages are now integrated into your Buddy Info. Plus, check out the updated feeds area.
Connection Settings: For users who are having difficulty connecting to AIM we have updated our last Connection settings tab to include more web-based help information about connection settings, proxies, and firewalls. We also combined the HTTP/HTTPS protocols so now AIM will always try your secured network if you manually select this option.
Plus: Continue to test our new Status in the Buddy List feature, TXT Message mode feature from the IM window, and QQ games plugin.

You may find a few things still in progress: Links to AIM Dashboard and AIM Profiles, plus, a glitch with the orange indicator not disappearing after you click it. No fear, those updates are in the works.

We hope you enjoy testing the latest version of the AIM 6 beta software.

AIM 6.5.3.12 Released
08/23/07 - Help us test drive our new AIM 6 beta software - version 6.5.3.12. We've heard your feedback on our earlier beta tests and have continued to make improvements to our new features. This version includes the following:

Status message in the Buddy List®: Broadcast a personal message to your friends, even when you're available. Click Enter status message here… and type a message. It will appear under your screen name on their Buddy List and in your IM window. New! Thanks to beta feedback, we’ve updated this feature to only show a custom status message in your Buddy List view. Note: You'll only see the set message of users who are on your buddy list and testing with the same version. We encourage you to create a new screen name and post it in the Message Boards created for this feature so others can add it to their Buddy List to see how this feature works.
State selector menu: Do you want to set yourself as Available, Away, Mobile or invisible? Choose from the handy state drop down button. Want to go away fast? Click the yellow sticky icon and we’ll set your away message. Click it again to come back from away.
Play games with your buddies: As part of the AIM install, you can choose to install additional software from QQ games. This plugin allows you to invite your AIM buddies to play games like Pool, Poker, Puzzles, Matching and more! Compete against buddies or other players in live games or relax in practice mode.
Modern design, plus more color: Check out the new sleek chrome. We’ve also added more color to the top of your Buddy List. Pick your favorite by clicking on the color wheel in the upper right corner.
Grouped IM tabs: Look for enhancements to your grouped IM window tabs. If your buddy goes away, you’ll see the away sticky to indicate this change. Look for visuals for mobile, idle, and offline too.
Get Buddy Info: We’ve removed the blue (i) from the Buddy List. It now only appears on your buddy’s details card when you hover over their screen name. You’ll still get the orange (i) in the Buddy List to indicate something new about your buddies.
Tips from AIM: Did you know you could do that on AIM? We’ve added more tips to the IM window since our last test.
Plus: Continue to test our new TXT Message mode feature from the IM window. Don't waste your mobile phone text messages. Send them from AIM. Clicking the TXT Msg button on the IM form is just one new place you can access this mode. And, if you are having issues signing on AIM can help configure your firewall or proxy settings. Look for the Connection tab in your settings manager.

AIM 6.2.32.1 Beta Released
This is by far the best version (BETA too) that I have ever seen AOL release. Not only do I like the look of the buddy list more but you can now, finally, read status (non-away) messages. For example, if you have ever used iChat on Mac OS X, you would know of the feature "Current iTunes Track" among just setting a different available message (green) and not actually being away (red). Now all that needs to be done is more people start using AIM 6.2, even though in Beta, when released people should definitely upgrade.

Change Log:
07/17/07 - Help us test drive our new AIM 6 beta software - version 6.2.32.1 . We've added a number of new features and want your feedback. This version contains the following:

* Connection settings: Having issues signing on? AIM can help you configure your firewall or proxy settings. Look for the Connection tab in your settings manager.
* Status message in the Buddy List: Broadcast a personal message to your friends, even when you're available. Simply type your message in the field under your screen name at the top of your Buddy List. It will appear under your screen name on their Buddy List and when they hover over you name too. More status integration is coming soon.
* My Quick Access Panel: Rollover your screen name at the top of the Buddy List and get one-click access to your settings, email, expressions and buddy info
* Buddy Details: From the Buddy List, roll over your buddy's screen name and take action. Send a text message, call their PC, send an email and more. Don't forget to try expanding the form and save info for your buddy.
* Tips from AIM: Did you know you could do that on AIM? Look for a tip on the IM window.
* Updated Advertisement placement: Conveniently moved to the bottom of the Buddy List to allow easier access to your menus.
* Text Message Mode: Don't waste your mobile phone text messages. Send them from AIM. Clicking the TXT Msg button on the IM form is just one new place you can access this mode.

AIM 6.2.14.2 Beta Released
This release incorporates the following new features:

* The Buddy Notes feature, also known as Buddy Notes in AIM 5.9. The Edit/New Buddy window now offers a Notes field. The Notes entered against a buddy are surfaced in the Quickview tooltip for that buddy.
* A new theme, black chrome, has been added to the color changer, accessible from the small circular button next to Help on your Buddy List.

The new build also offers some functionality changes:

* A self-extracting installer will be used to deliver the build to your machine. This means that there should be fewer problems with downloading installers for this and future versions of the software.
* The Notifications window has been redesigned to look much smaller and use Arial font text as opposed to the Times New Roman font that was used in previous versions of the software.
* The Settings window is now accessible from the Sign On screen. To get to it, simply select or enter an already-saved user name in the Screen Name field and then either click the Settings link below the Sign On button or go to Edit then select Settings.

AIM 6.1.16.1 Beta Released
There are UI changes and new features in this build:

* The application now features a color picker that allows you to change the color of Buddy List and other related window elements. The picker, located next to Help menu on your Buddy List, includes 10 colors, including the default orange color.
* Another new feature gives you the ability to change the style of your Buddy List's groups and screen names. You can do this via your Settings window's Style tab.
* Sub-sorting of Buddy List groups has been implemented in this build. Simply select the appropriate menu item from a Buddy List group's right mouse button contextual menu to invoke this new functionality.
* Your Buddy List window can be docked to left or right of your desktop. You may turn docking on via your Settings window's Buddy List tab.
* UI changes have been introduced with respect to the way linked screen names are displayed in your Buddy List. The status button of all linked names should now be displayed at top of your Buddy List. Clicking a screen name's button will display the buddies associated with that name.

AIM Architect Leaves AOL for Google
Justin Uberti, lead developer of AOL Instant Messenger who worked on the product for almost nine years, last week left the company and joined the ranks of Google. Uberti played an integral role in the launch of AIM Triton and the Open AIM initiative.

Google has long been hiring top talent from rivals such as Microsoft and Yahoo, and Uberti's departure from AOL may indicate the search giant wishes to grow its fledgling Google Talk client. As part of Google's $1 billion investment in AOL, the companies already plan to link up their IM networks and Uberti could play a role in making that a reality.

AOL opens up AIM further
AOL said Monday that it was launching a new Web site in hopes that developers would create new applications to be used in a new AIM Web page creation tool. Called IAmAlpha.com, the site would allow developers to upload snippets of DHTML and then create applications from those snippets or those uploaded by others. These modules could then be embedded into a Web page. The modules are based on AOL's ModuleT open format that enables the syndication of mashups, Web content and Ajax applications.

"With the I Am Alpha website, our flexible and extensible module-building tools and a little creativity, the possibilities for modules are endless," said Kerry Parkins, Director of Audience Product Management for AOL. "The modules that developers generate will be vital as we create a new platform that will make it even easier for the more than 63 million active AIM users to connect with their circle of 'buddies' and others within the AIM community."

AOL Releases Open AIM SDK
AOL has just announced the release of an SDK, which will allow the creation and use of 3rd party IM clients and plug-ins on their massive Instant Messaging network. The announcement which was just posted over at Reuters a few minutes ago, comes very unexpected and sheds some light as to why programs such as Trillian have been battling AOL for the last little bit.

A member of the AOL staff just posted an interesting thread on our forums with more details concerning the SDK:

"Today is a historic day at AOL as we annouced, just moments ago, a software development kit for AOL Instant Messenger. Open AIM will empower you, as the developer, to write custom clients, plugins, and eventually bots. When you include this SDK with the web presence API and AIM Model-T (IAmAlpha, or AIM Modules) we are really starting to build compelling social network development tools. The SDK will be available starting at 5AM EST today at developer.aim.com."

The AOL staffer claims that this project has been worked on for the last 2 years or so, and that there are 'no' restrictions as to what can and cannot be developed with the SDK. The only limitation cited, which is sure to keep Trillian and co. on their heals, is the apparent ban on 'multi-headed client' implementation.

Microsoft urges users to update Flash Player
In an unprecedented move, Microsoft has issued a critical advisory urging users to apply a critical update from Flash Player update from Macromedia.

The vulnerability first reported by eEye Digital Security and Sec Consult, can allow malicious parties to inject unauthorized code, using invalid array indexes, to be executed by Flash Player. This vulnerability is browser independent. Users who have already upgraded to Flash Player 8 are not affected by this issue. Macromedia recommends all Flash Player 7 and earlier users upgrade to this new version, which can be downloaded from the Macromedia Player Download Center.
